A Southern Maine woman was struck and killed this morning while she was out walking her dog. The pair were hit just a few steps from their home by a 16-year-old in a pickup truck.

According to the Press Herald, it was just after 6:30 this morning when Rita Douglas, age 75, was walking northbound on the side of Route 24 in the town of Harpswell, when she was hit by a passing vehicle. She was killed, as was her Pomeranian named Foxy.

The accident happened on a curve in the road, near the intersection of Harpwell Islands and Mountain Roads. 16-year-old Isabella Slocum was driving a pickup truck, moving in the same direction as Douglas and her dog, when she struck the pair. The speed limit in the area is 30 mph. Police say they don't know, at this point, how fast the teen was driving.

Douglas was married to local lobsterman, Robert Douglas. The pair had planned to celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary on Sunday.
