Folks driving along Unions Street in Bangor this week may have had to do a double take, as the playgrounds that once occupied space in Hayford Park are no longer there. But there's a good reason for that: Hayford Park is one of two parks in Bangor getting a much needed upgrade this year.

According to Debbie Gendreau, Assistant Director at Bangor Parks and Rec, the city made a plan 10 years ago to update one park per year with new equipment. The pandemic threw their schedule off by just a little bit. As a result, crews will be tackling Hayford Park the next two weeks and when that's done, Chapin Park will be next on the list.

Gendreau says families can expect two separate areas of play at Hayford, just as there was in the previous set up; one for toddlers and one for school-aged kids. In addition to that, she says there's an exciting new feature that's sure to get kids smiling: There will be a standalone climbing feature added to the playground.

Construction for the new skate park, which will be located near the new playground in the Mansfield Complex, will also start up later this month. But that project will run independently of the playground renovations.

Gendreau expects the Hayford rebuild to be completed by the middle of the month.

I've spent quite a bit of time at parks across Bangor with my kids. I am glad to see these renovations taking place and can't wait to let the kids loose to explore their new digs!
