Bangor Gets Its Very First Vegan Donut Biz

Anyone who knows me in even the smallest way, knows that I love donuts more than just about anything. I am a donut king. It doesn't even always matter what kind of donuts. I have no shame. As quickly as I would devour a bunch of donuts from Frank's or Gosselin's, I would empty a box of donuts from a Circle K.

I've had donuts all over the country. Everywhere from here in Maine, to yanking the van over on tour because I saw the Krispy Creme light come on as we drove by. Those delicious little dough rings make my world go round. I've often thought, that the only person I've ever seen love them as much as I do is Homer Simpson.

Well, according to WABI, Bangor is about to get a donut business of a different type. A vegan donut shop, something Bangor has never had before. Tiffany Harris, and some former classmates from Old Town high school, banded together and are cranking out vegan donuts once a week out of the Fork & Spoon kitchen downtown, under the name The Donut GroVe... Capitalizing the "v" for Vegan.

Then they take the yummy little dough circles and sell them on Sundays at the farmer's market in Bangor. And recently, they've also started offering delivery on Fridays. That way, if vegan donuts are your thing, you can get them a couple of times a week. No word as to whether or not they intend to open a regular store front.

In case you don't know what a vegan diet is all about, according to VeganSociety.com, it's defined like this:

Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

So basically, if a food item ever had parents, or seems to exploit an animal of it's natural resources, vegans won't eat it. So no meat, obviously, but that would mean for instance, no milk, cheese, or butter. But going even further, lots of super strict vegans won't even eat honey, because your taking something from the bees that's not yours.

Their treats have been a big hit at the farmer's market, selling like hot cakes. Vegan hot cakes, that is. So if you're interested in giving them a try, you may want to make it down a little early, just in case. Either way, I am anxious to try yet another type of donut to add to my personal menu of tasty treats.
