Maine Gov. Paul LePage has written a letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack threatening to pull Maine from administering the food stamp program because of a dispute over allowing sugary foods and drinks to be purchased with food stamps.

In his June 17 letter to Vilsack, LePage addresses the issue in his typically bombastic fashion.

"It's time for the federal government to wake up and smell the energy drinks," LePage wrote. "Doubtful that it will, I will be pursuing options to implement reform unilaterally or cease Maine's administration of the food stamp program altogether. You maintain such a broken program that I do not want my name attached to it. I suggest you start browsing the Maine classifieds for commercial real estate leases."

According to a report from the Bangor Daily News, the crux of the issue is Maine's desire to get a waiver from the federal government to create a program which would prevent Mainers from purchasing so-called "junk food" with food stamps, which are paid for by the federal government.
