Tonight’s artists have one hit song that morphed from a sorrowful cowboy ballad into a full on arena rock song. Can you think of a song that could go either way??

In this story from UCR the ballad gets what they called Styxfied. The song from their Pieces of Eight album is Renegade.  When the song was first written by Tommy Shaw about a gunslinger that was about to be hung for his crimes it was nothing short of mournful done in its acoustic form. And it was Dennis DeYoung who bumped its potential by suggesting they boost the tempo, simplify the vocals and add the rhythm guitars.

They liked the result of these changes so well that JY asked Tommy to do the solo. Boom a hit was born, written by Shaw by made great by the band’s collaboration.

Here they are with tonight's featured song.
