Not counting all of the rivers and streams, Maine is home to more than 6,000 lakes and ponds. Maine has enough shoreline for everyone in the state to have a waterfront home. Obviously it's not financially feasible for everyone, myself included, but it would be pretty awesome, though.

And when it comes to Maine's lakes and ponds, most are available for recreational activities whether it be boating, kayaking, fishing or swimming. But there's one lake, right here in Central Maine, where you're actually not allowed to swim.

Now, to be clear, it's only half the lake that swimming isn't allowed in, but it's a BIG lake, so that's a huge 'no swimming' zone. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm talking about Maine's China Lake.

I've been boating on China Lake for the better part of two decades. I can tell you where every shallow spot, fishing hole and boating hazard are pretty much anywhere out there. I can also tell you where you're not allowed to swim. But why?

Half of China Lake is home to the Vassalboro drinking supply

By most metrics, China lake is big. The lake spans an area of just under 4,000 acres, a lot of that is in the 'west basin'. You see, China Lake has two primary areas, the east side (the long side) and the west side, or west basin. After you pass through the narrows, you're in the west basin- this is the drinking supply.

Worry not, there is PLENTY of China Lake available for you to swim in. Just remember, if you're ever out on the lake, don't get caught taking a dip over in the west (Vassalboro) side. They don't want their water to taste like your pasty skin flakes. That sounds like it could be a new cereal!

Happy (and safe) boating and swimming, my friends!
