Lewiston, Maine Commemoration Event Set for October 25th
How do you respectfully and properly commemorate the victims of a mass shooting, especially the first year? It's something too many towns and communities have had to figure out over the years, including Lewiston, Maine.
As someone who survived the mass shooting in Las Vegas, I remember the whirlwind of emotions around the first-year commemoration. Leading up to the date, it was painful, uncomfortable, and to be completely honest, confusing. Is having an event the best idea? And I was the emcee. What in the world do I say, or do?
As the date arrived, I received my answers. Yes, a commemoration is not only necessary but extremely healing, and no, you don't need to worry about anything other than just show up.
The community will handle everything.
The commemoration is for those who are still grieving, for those who are still suffering from anxiety, for those who are still scared, and for everyone to be surrounded by love and to be shown that they are not alone. It is also a message that no evil will ever keep the community from being there for each other.
