Maine isn't close to being one of the hottest states in the country. Based on average annual temperature, it's actually one of the coldest places in the U.S.

During Maine summers, it can get very uncomfortable, but it's often not the heat alone that makes things unbearable.

It's the combined heat and humidity that sometimes pushes the heat index to intolerable levels.

So what's Maine's highest temperature of all time?

Maine's hottest temperature

According to the State Climate Extremes Committee, Maine's highest ever temperature was recorded in North Bridgton, where it reached 105 degrees twice in 1911. The record was set on July 4 and then matched on July 10.

While that's pretty impressive for the state of Maine, it's not even close to the hottest temperature recorded in the U.S.

That record belongs to Greenland Ranch, California, where it hit 134 degrees on July 10, 1913, according to the SCEC.

What is Maine's average temperature?

Data from the SCEC shows that Maine's average temperature from January to December 2024 was 45 degrees.

That does not sound very promising if you're a fan of warmer temperatures.

The only contiguous states colder than Maine during that same timeframe were North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana.

The other northern New England states were not far off from Maine's temperature, with Vermont (46.3 degrees) and New Hampshire (47 degrees) both sitting inside the top eight when it comes to the coldest states during that time period.

It's funny that even when you're talking about how hot it can get in Maine, the conversation goes back to how cold it is.

But there you have it.

The hottest temperature recorded in Maine dates back well over 100 years ago.

It may not be quite as hot as Greenland Ranch, but a wicked scorchah nonetheless.
