The Rockland Police Chief is asking the community for compassion while the investigation into a student's tragic death continues.

Rockland, Maine Student Dies After  Being Struck By a School Bus

Brayden Callahan, 12, was struck by the school bus he had just exited on November 21, 2025. There were witnesses to the incident, including students who were still on the bus.

A crash report, obtained by WMTW-TV, states that Brayden had just left the bus and was crossing the street in the crosswalk when the bus pulled into the roadway and ran over him.

Bus driver Jeffrey Colburn allegedly told investigators that he "simply didn't see him."

Rockland, Maine Police Chief Addresses the Community About a Student's Death

On Wednesday, Rockland Police Chief Tim Carroll issued a statement on Facebook expressing the department's sincere condolences to Brayden's family.

He acknowledges that the community is reeling from the tragedy and that it's going to take a significant amount of time for people to heal.

Chief Carroll goes on to say that the investigation into Brayden's death is going to take time. Multiple agencies are working together to determine exactly what happened. Investigators want to make sure they get it right, and don't want to comment on the progress until they know the answers.

We must get this right for everyone involved, family, friends, teachers, and really the whole community that is suffering.

Carroll goes on to address the rumors and negativity that have been floating around since the incident, stating that they will only serve to inflame the emotions of everyone.

This is a time to grieve and support the family that has suffered a great loss. This is not the time to distract with other non-related things that have nothing to do with this tragedy itself.

He says information will be released when they know how the crash happened. In the meantime, Chief Carroll encourages everyone to keep Brayden's family in their prayers.
