No one was hurt in an early morning house fire in Waterville that has left 10 people homeless.

Where Was the Fire?

The Waterville Fire Department responded to a house fire at 22 School Street just after 1:30 Monday morning. When crews arrived they found heavy fire on the second and third floors of the building. While they battled the blaze, members of the Waterville Police Department confirmed that all the occupants had exited the building safely.

Mutual aid crews came from Winslow, Oakland, Fairfield, and Skowhegan to help extinguish the fire. Their goal was to limit the fire damage to the top two floors. Officials say Central Maine Power had to shut off electricity to School Street until the fire was out.

Did Everyone Make It Out Safely?

Ten people were displaced by the early morning house fire. There were no reports of injuries. The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Team was notified and will work, in the coming days, to assist the family.

Were There Working Smoke Detectors in the House?

Fire officials say a working smoke detector likely alerted the family and contributed to a safe exit from the building. This is another example of why it's so important to have working smoke detectors, to give occupants as much time as possible to escape, before the smoke and flames make that impossible.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. Part of the roof collapsed during the fire, so the building has been deemed unsafe.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
