It's difficult to find something more iconic in Maine than the picturesque Baxter State Park.
The state's largest park is easy to praise.
Baxter State Park is One of Maine's Most Iconic Locations
Located in Piscataquis County in North-Central Maine, Baxter State Park spans over 200,000 acres and serves as a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. The park is known for its pristine waters, beautiful scenery, world-class hiking, excellent fishing spots, unique wildlife, and outstanding camping.
Baxter is also home to many of Maine's tallest peaks, including Mount Katahdin (the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail), as well as Baxter Peak, Hamlin Peak, North and South Brother, Double Top, and others. Many of these peaks are easily connected by the park's trail system, making it truly a hiker's paradise.
In fact, it's so much of a paradise that one of its most beloved and challenging hiking trails is receiving national praise.
The recognition comes from the pop culture site Stars Insider, which published an article listing every state's most breathtaking hike. Maine's representative was the legendary Knife Edge Trail found on Mount Katahdin.
The Knife Edge is Maine's Most Breathtaking Hiking Trail
The Knife Edge Trail is challenging yet captivating, featuring narrow sections, precarious exposures, unpredictable weather, and sweeping panoramic views that showcase the very best of Maine's rugged landscape.
Stretching 1.1 miles from the summit of Mount Katahdin to South Peak, the trail then connects to the Dudley Trail.
Classified as a "hard" route on AllTrails, it has earned a 4.5 out of 5 rating, despite its tough and potentially dangerous reputation.
Hikers are treated to breathtaking vistas of Baxter State Park and the surrounding wilderness, all from some of the highest points in Maine.
Don't just take my word for it—here's a quote from Curated on why Knife Edge made the list.

This trail is not for the faint of heart—trust me on that.
I was brave enough to tackle it when I was younger, but now, in my middle years, there's no way I'd attempt it again.
That said, if you have the nerve, it’s undoubtedly an adventure worth undertaking. It's an unforgettable experience.
