New Commercial Development Proposed For Ellsworth’s Whitney Field
Chuck and Belinda Lawrence are at it again! The ambitious couple who currently own Tradewinds and the Dunkin' Donuts franchise in Blue Hill, and Citgo gas stations in Bangor, Brewer, Milo, and Eddington, are currently "proposing" building a retail complex at Whitney Field on outer State Street in Ellsworth.
Whitney Field runs beside the railroad tracks and was the site of many school cross country running events.
Chuck Lawrence who ran Hannaford in Ellsworth for many years says that the site would include a couple of anchor stores, one being a frozen yogurt cafe and the other being a burger franchise. Could we be talking Sweet Frog and Five Guys? Are we salivating yet?
The site would also hopefully house a convenience store and gas station. Lawrence is intrigued by the immense amount of commuter traffic on Route 1A. There is not a gas station on that side of the road between Holden and the hilltop on Route 3 in Ellsworth.
Everything is in the planning stage at the moment but Lawrence would like to see the physical project start by the first of August.
Will the Lawrences actually own the property? According to an article at Fenviewer.com, "he's helping a friend with the process".
The Maine Department of Transportation will be refurbishing Outer State Street in 2015 from the Union River Bridge to the triangle by Friend and Friend. The route 179 intersection will be completely redone.
