Southern Maine Turnpike Accident Leaves One Dead
One person is dead and another injured after an early morning crash on the Maine Turnpike in southern Maine.
Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the accident happened at around 6:30 this morning in the northbound lane of the Maine Turnpike, near the Wells, Ogunquit town line.Troopers say it looks like the car hit the median, then crossed over to the other side of the road, through a guardrail, and struck a tree. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
WGME-TV reports the passenger was killed in the crash and the driver injured. Police say the driver's injuries appeared to be non-life threatening. Their names have not been released but both men are believed to be from out of state.
McCausland says one lane of traffic is expected to be closed to traffic for much of the morning as Troopers investigate. Drivers are encouraged to pass through the area safely while they're working.
