A study of over 80 Million words on Twitter makes Maine one of the happiest states.

Smart folks at the Vermont Complex Systems Center wanted to see if a 'geographic place correlates with and potentially influences societal levels of happiness.' They looked at particular city's as well as states.

Here's how they did this study. Researchers rated about 10,000 words on a scale of one to ten. One being sad, ten being happy. Happy words included: Love, rainbow, beauty, wonderful and hope. Sad words included: Lied, hate and ugly.

The happiest states were:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Maine
  3. Nevada
  4. Utah
  5. Vermont

Saddest states where Louisiana and Mississippi.
