Did you know that Maine has been trying to pass for years a bill to make feminine hygiene products exempt from sales taxes?

First off, did you know that Maine DOES charge a sales tax for feminine hygiene products? Yes! This stuff is considered 'non essential'. I heard about this 4 years ago and decided to sue Maine to have it change.

Not necessary as Maine had a bill going through the system to END taxing tampons!

Falmouth rep Cathy Breen is a co-sponsor of the latest attempt to end this stupid tax -  bill LD 286 - "An Act To Provide a Sales Tax Exemption for Feminine Hygiene Products". It's sponsored by Rep. Denise Tepler. There was a public hearing in the Taxation Committee February 26, and the work session is slated for March 7.

Rep. Breen was kind enough to let me know that this was introduced last year also. It passed both houses of the Legislature but was ultimately not funded and died on the Special Appropriations Table. She thinks this year could be different.

She is so kind, and offered to keep me up to speed on the progress of this bill!

I'm not the only one passionate about getting rid of that incredibly stupid tax. Rep. Breen has been approached by a wide range of people, including a high school student who was writing her senior project on it.  A lot of people don't know that these products are not exempt from tax - let's end that!
