At the moment, Amazon does not charge a sale tax from purchasers here in Maine, but that could soon change.

As of this past Friday, Amazon started collecting sales tax from purchasers in Minnesota and Maryland.  Amazon had already been collecting sales tax from buyers in 21 states.

This means that now 69% or Americans will be subject to a sales tax when they buy something from Amazon.com.

Amazon has always fought hard to prevent states from collecting sales tax so it would have an advantage over physical stores set up in state.

Here in Maine we are suppose to fill out and pay a "sales use tax" when we file our Maine State Income Tax return for purchases made on the internet.  State government would love it if all internet retailers charged a Maine sales tax.
