Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen + More Raise Funds for Sandy Victims
The devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy brought out some big names from the rock community to lend their voices in support. Last night, a one-hour telethon, ‘Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together,’ was broadcast to raise money for the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts.
Hosted by Matt Lauer, with help from Brian Williams, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Danny DeVito, Jon Stewart, Al Roker and Kevin Bacon, the show mixed performances with footage of the destruction caused by the storm.
Jon Bon Jovi performed a medley of ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home’ and ‘Living on a Prayer.’ Billy Joel sang the relatively obscure ‘Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)’ with some new lyrics to reflect Sandy’s wrath rather than New York’s mid-70s economic woes.
Joel stayed on stage, as Steven Tyler, Bruce Springsteen and Jimmy Fallon provided the evening’s lightest moment, a cover of the Drifters’ soul classic, ‘Under the Boardwalk.’ Surprisingly, Fallon took the lead vocal on the first verse, causing Stewart to joke that Fallon was a “bold man” for upstaging the rock legends.
Three-fifths of Aerosmith — Tyler, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford — performed ‘Dream On.’ Although Tyler refrained from dropping an f-bomb this time, his piano playing was not in sync with his bandmates and seemed to affect his vocals. Sting‘s acoustic version of ‘Message in a Bottle,’ while apt, felt rushed. But at least he left the lute at home.
Springsteen and the E Street Band closed out the show. Perhaps wisely, Springsteen chose not to perform ‘4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy)’ and went for an abbreviated version of the ‘Land of Hope and Dreams.’ ending the hour on a note of optimism. “God bless New York. God bless the Jersey Shore,” Springsteen said as the last notes rang out.
If you missed the show, but still want to contribute, you can visit the American Red Cross’ website, call 1-800-RED-CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
