The call came in to the Bangor police as a driver slumped over the wheel, stopped in the middle of the Penobscot Bridge between Bangor and Brewer.

Bangor Police Lt. Paul Edwards says Bangor fire personnel were working on the man behind the wheel.

An off duty nurse with St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor reported to police that she had stopped to assist the driver and when she reached into the car she was poked by a hypodermic needle.

Lt. Edwards says a subsequent police interview with the man gave police probable cause to believe he was operating under the influence of drugs.

Police say 26 year old George Keefe of Glenburn allegedly ingested heroin before experiencing medical difficulties behind the wheel.
