One person was killed in a single-car crash on the interstate Saturday. Police say the deceased owned the vehicle but was riding in the passenger seat. The driver had a suspended license and may be facing charges.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Anthony Vandyck, age 40 of Fairfield, was killed in the crash in New Gloucester at around 1 p.m. on Saturday. Vandyck owned the Land Rover, but was in the passenger seat. The vehicle was being driven by Derek Knowles, age 35 of Skowhegan.

Police say Knowles, who had a suspended license due to multiple violations, lost control of the SUV in the northbound lanes, on a straight stretch of road. It struck the guardrails in the median and then ended up overturning down an embankment, off the breakdown lane. Vandyck was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, through the sun roof. He died at the scene.

Knowles had minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital, before being arrested on outstanding warrants, not related to the crash. Knowles was taken to Androscoggin County jail. Troopers will now consult with the district attorney's office on what additional charges will be filed against Knowles.
