It's been more than 40 years since Eddie Van Halen revolutionized the way rock guitar is played with the release of his band's self-titled debut album.

To celebrate, we've collected pictures of the Van Halen star from almost every year since his band hit the national spotlight. You'll see him with long hair, short hair and a variety of his most famous guitars. You'll also see him performing alongside all three of the band's lead singers: original and current ringleader David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone.

Over the past two decades, Van Halen has dramatically reduced his touring and public appearance schedule. That means there are a few years (specifically 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2011 and 2016) for which we can't find any photos that we're legally allowed to use.

It's been nearly three years since Van Halen toured the U.S., and six since they released their latest album, 2012's A Different Kind of Truth. Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen is currently working on his debut solo album. It's not known what the Van Halen band -- which last we knew includes Eddie along with his brother Alex on drums, Wolfgang on bass and Roth on vocals -- plans to do next. But we can sure daydream about it!
