A few years ago my brother and his wife tapped the maple trees ion their property and had a grand old time boiling down the sap to the most delicious maple syrup.  When I was a kid my grandfather used to make maple syrup for us too.

That said,  when I saw the yesterday Governor LePage did the annual tapping of the tree at the Blaine house it made me smile. As Fox 22 reports, the maple syrup industry to Maine's economy by contributing an estimated $48-point-seven million dollars annually. And Maine is the third largest producer in the nation.

I once visited a big maple out fit in Vermont who had a reverse osmosis machine to get the water out quicker that was fascinating

Here are some other fun maple facts from the Maine Maple Producers

A maple tree us usually over 45 years old and 12” in diameter before they are tapped

An average tree will produce 10 gallons of sap

It takes 30 -50 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup.
