Once again it's been an unusual winter with temperatures fluctuating between cold and mild, rain and snow.

Starting in late December the Maine Warden Service issued advisories to Mainers, through local media outlets, that some ice is safe, and a lot of ice is NOT.

Just this past weekend Wardens responded to reports of people, snowmobiles and vehicles going through the ice. Luckily, every one survived this weekend to tell the tale of how they probably should have used better judgement.

Wardens were called to Moosehead Lake, Green lake, Schoodic Lake, Sebasticook Lake, Long Lake, Big Wood Lake, and Long Pond. Now there are several vehicle owners who have to pay the expense of getting their truck or ATV out of the body of water they went in to.

Make test holes in the ice before you go out to be sure there's enough ice to support the weight and if you're not sure, ask a local, or don't take the risk.
