John Mellencamp Annoyed by Title of New Film ‘Jack & Diane’

Just in case you saw the title of the upcoming movie ‘Jack & Diane’ and wondered if maybe John Mellencamp had something to do with it, he’s issued a press release clearing up any possible confusion.

“You don’t hear my song in the film and I played no part in suggesting or offering this title,” Mellencamp points out. “It’s most apparent that the lead characters were named with the hope that the familiar title might resonate in some people’s minds. I guess that’s OK to do, strictly from a legal perspective, but riding on someone else’s coattails and having a moral compass is left up to each individual.”

While Mellencamp’s annoyance isn’t surprising — he doesn’t call himself ‘Little Bastard’ for nothing — the film’s title might be construed as something of a compliment; after all, nobody would want to call anythingJack & Diane‘ if his song hadn’t topped the charts when it was released in 1982, and hadn’t enjoyed such a lengthy life on classic rock radio stations.

While Mellencamp’s more recent efforts haven’t enjoyed the same level of commercial success — he hasn’t had a gold record since ‘Cuttin’ Heads’ in 2001 — he’s remained solidly active, both in the studio (his most recent release, ‘No Better Than This,’ reached the Billboard Top 10 in 2010) and on the stage. Earlier this year, he debuted ‘Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,’ a musical he’d worked on with Stephen King for nearly a decade; a soundtrack album, featuring performances from Rosanne Cash, Sheryl Crow, Elvis Costello, Taj Mahal, Neko Case and others, is said to be in the works.
