After being shut down because of unsafe conditions, the Abol trail will be ready next year.

It's been a year since the Baxter State Park Authority shut down the Abol trail because the unstable Abol Slide. The Abol Slide experienced a lot of debris movement over the winter, making it more unstable. Park officials say search and rescue operations would be too dangerous with the condition of the slide.

Crews have been busy relocating the trail. The $100,000 project winds the trail along the side of the rockslide to avoid further interruptions. At this point, crews have cleared most of the trail and plan to add granite staircases and drainage features.

The BDN reports the trail should reopen sometime next year. The trail remains closed for now.

This isn't the first time the Abol trail was closed. It was shutdown in the 1930s and ’40s because of landslide activity.
