Maine Ranked as Having the Worst Landlords in All of the US
Everyone has at least one story of a less-than-ideal landlord.
Let me start by saying, I'd be lying if I said I was always the best tenant. Like most folks, I was young once and made plenty of bad decisions. Eventually you learn to smarten up and fly right. But there have also been plenty of situations where I felt my landlord was all but a total psycho.
If you're wondering who was in 2nd and 3rd? Montana and Idaho were right behind. Massachusetts and Virginia scored the best.
Sadly, those are always the ones that stand out in your mind. I used to have a landlord that would just randomly open people's doors with no warning when they weren't home, and then send them notes about how dirty their apartment was. Thankfully, one tenant's father was a lawyer and took care of that pretty quickly. Funny too, because I remember when I looked at the place, he was complaining about high turnover. Gee, you think?!
Mainers have been ringing the bell about crappy landlords forever.
Especially since the pandemic. Rent going up constantly, or being evicted what feels like every year, because the landlord wants to raise the rent more than anyone should on a single person. There are any number of reasons why people are tired of their landlord. But now, it would seem Maine may be in just as bad shape as everyone thinks.
According to a survey from MoveBuddha.com, and shared by WGME, Maine officially has the worst landlords in the country. That doesn't mean they're all bad, but the ones that are have given the rest of them a bad enough name, that we're now the best at being the worst.
What were the main complaints from tenants?
The two chief complaints involved what is basically criminal activity on the landlord's part, such as refusing to return security deposits, or discriminating against tenants. More and more, when you see people complaining on social media, they bring up the security deposit the most.
You'll see stories of people saying there was zero damage to the place of any kind, and that they left it spotless, in move-in condition. Or senseless evictions simply to raise rent. It's ridiculous. And If you're wondering who was in 2nd and 3rd? Montana and Idaho were right behind. Massachusetts and Virginia scored the best. You could try those spots, I guess?
You could try any one of these places and see if it's any better, if you've finally had it...
