It was back in September of 2022, that Bangor's Panning board unanimously approved plans for Michigan-based retail, development, and leasing company AlrigUSA, to put a cafe, a gym, and a medical clinic in an area of Broadway that hasn't been used in years.

According to the Bangor Daily News, AlrigUSA had big plans for the double lot, located at 685 and 699 Broadway, by the busy Hannaford Shopping Center.

"The company plans to construct a 9,000 square-foot building that would house a drive-through Starbucks coffeehouse, an Orange Theory gym, and a medical clinic that’s part of a national chain. The parcel would have 72 parking spaces and eight Tesla car charging ports, according to project plans and project engineer Jake Modestow."

City officials, construction at that location started 2 weeks ago, with the installation of the footings and foundation.

The City of Bangor's Planning office says the Broadway project has been in the works for some time and was contingent upon a traffic pattern change.

"Staff worked on this with the applicant for the last couple of months to ensure the requirements were met.  The Board conditioned their approval on the issuance of a Traffic Movement Permit from Maine DOT.  The applicant has been working with them on this permit for the last few months as well."

While the plans for the outside construction have been submitted and are underway, plans for the inside of the building have yet to be submitted for a permit.

There was also a proposal passed by the Planning Board last year to put a Starbucks location at 570 Stillwater Avenue, where the Verizon Store, Subway, and Supercuts are currently. The permit to demolish the building was issued in February, but the current tenants still occupy the space, and no work has gone on at that location yet.
