Peregrine Falcon Returned to the Wild

Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife

A Peregrine Falcon gets a second chance at life, after it was spotted hopping along in New Sharon in August. The young male bird was released into the wild this week after recovering from its injuries.

Warden Kris McCabe spotted the bird in August and captured it, transporting it to Avian Haven Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center in Freedom. The falcon was nursed back to health in its raptor facility.

Today, Wildlife Rehabilitator Marc Payne and Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Biologist Erin Call set the bird free along the banks of the Kennebec River. The Peregrine falcon took flight immediately and was soon out of sight.

Peregrine Falcons have been federally de-listed from the endangered species list, but breeding pairs of falcons are still on the state’s endangered list. There are an estimated 25 pairs in Maine.
