Officials are searching the Penobscot River for a possible jumper from the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.

The Ellsworth American reports an abandoned vehicle was found overnight on the bridge that spans the river between Prospect and Verona Island. State Police are investigating and the Maine Marine Patrol was contacted at 6 a.m. Searchers were on the river by 7.

In recent years, there have been conversations about possible preventative measures for situations like this. A 2014 bill that would have built a suicide prevention fence was voted down. And, when the Golden Gate Bridge installed a suicide prevention net beneath the structure, some thought that might be the solution. The BDN reports that at least seven people have taken their lives by jumping from the span since it was opened in 2011.

This story will be updated as more details become available.
