Waldo-Hancock Bridge Demolition Almost Complete
Photo by Emily Hopkins[/caption]The Waldo-Hancock bridge, that has been an iconic location for Maine travelers since it first opened in 1931, is almost completely gone.
The bridge was originally designed as a way for Route 1 to bypass Bangor, and was in dire need of repair back in 2000. However, after beginning to rehabilitate the bridge, it was discovered that it was deteriorated beyond repair and so the Penobscot Narrows bridge was constructed.
After having the bridges stand side by side for nearly six and a half years the demolition of the Waldo-Hancock bridge began in November of 2012 and is going to be finished sometime in the next week.
