Fifty-four percent of U.S. adults say in today’s times, bosses expect them to work during their vacations. That’s according to a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive.

While 51 percent of employed Americans who take vacations agree that they would rather get a root canal than work during their time off, nearly two-thirds of those surveyed admitted that checking email eases their return to work.

Sixty-seven percent of respondents say family members get upset when they do work while on vacation.

The Harris Interactive survey of 2,071 adults was conducted from April 29 to May 1, 2013 on behalf of Ricoh, the technology company.
