The State Fire Marshal's Office has ruled on the cause of several local fires in separate communities, including a vehicle fire in Northern Maine.

A fire that remains under investigation happened on April 30, 2026, just before 5:00 am, in Rumford.

Crews responded to reports of smoke and heavy fire at 501 Virgin Street and found heavy fire on all three floors of a duplex.

One side of the building was under construction, while the other side was occupied by a family of four, with two dogs.

All occupants and animals got out safely, likely due to their working smoke detectors.

The State Fire Marshal's Office is still working to determine the cause of this fire.

Officials say the first of two fires on May 2, 2026, happened in Stockton Springs.

Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 32 Station Street at approximately 5:30 pm and found heavy fire coming from a two-and-one-half-story camp-style residence.

The building was unoccupied, so no injuries were reported in the fire, but the building sustained extensive damage.

An investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office determined the blaze originated from a propane wall-mounted heater and ruled it accidental.

Just after 7 pm that same night, the Glenburn Fire Department responded to a structure fire that they quickly contained to the basement of the house.

The State Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire started when a MAP gas container was knocked over near a wood stove.

Officials say the homeowner tried to move the gas container away from the fire, but inadvertently pushed it beneath a wooden workbench, which ignited.

The homeowner sustained minor injuries, and the fire was ruled accidental.

On May 3, 2026, the State Fire Marshal's Office was called to 270 Chapman Road in Presque Isle at approximately 3:00 am for a vehicle fire.

The vehicle's owner woke up to hear popping sounds before discovering the fire.

Investigators determined the vehicle had a history of electrical issues and determined the fire was accidental.

No injuries were reported.
