When they arrived, they found several motorists who witnessed the incident and passengers from the Concord Coach Lines bus, providing aid to the injured man. He was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with injuries that were believed to be serious, but not life-threatening.

Troopers spoke with witnesses who said that McDuffy stated he felt overheated before opening the bus's emergency roof access hatch and climbing out onto the roof, while the bus was in motion.

When the driver realized what was happening, they began slowing the bus and tried to pull over.

At this point, McDuffy fell from the roof to the roadway, landing on the shoulder of the Turnpike.
