I'm sure it all depends on who you ask.

As a person who spends a lot of time on social media, I've peeked into the comment section of many-a-thread online. I've always said the comment section is where you find people's true feelings. What they love... What they hate... All the things. Sometimes, you can even get a glimpse of how a whole group of people feel about something.

Often, these comments bring about stereotypes about people or places. Some of those may be entirely deserved, some might not. But sometimes you'll find that people who move somewhere from another state, may observe these comments and begin to make judgements. But what if people make broad judgements about where you live?

You argue on the internet about it, of course.

When this happens, people start to say things like, "oh, everybody is Maine is so mean because of this..." Or maybe a politics in your state precedes you online, and you have to defend it one way or the other. Or maybe there's just something about your state's culture that becomes hard to live down. Next thing you know, people are telling you how embarrassed you should be, or how embarrassing where you live might be.

This is the case over at Ranker.com. For instance, other than the people who live there, most people's first choice as an embarrassing state is likely Florida. Florida is often the butt of any joke that revolves around people doing embarrassing stuff. We've all heard of the pop culture game, "Germany or Florida". Basically the idea is that only the craziest of things on Earth only happen in Germany or Florida. That's why they're #1.

So where does Maine stack up in all this? Well, we fare quite well, considering the amazingly embarrassing competition out there. But overall, Maine ranks 48th! So for the most part, we manage to maintain a pretty decent image. Unsurprisingly, southern states pretty much dominate the Top 10. But 48th? Only Alaska and Hawaii beat us. So nice job, Maine. Let's keep up the good work!

Although, lets see how some Maine towns would embarrass themselves...
