Here’s When Maine can Expect the Last Frost this Spring
This winter hasn't been too bad, but I'm done with it.
Mainers always get antsy when spring weather starts to come around. At the end of February, we always start to get glimpses into what the latter part of the year has in store. Historically, we've even had record warmth in late winter. But there's nothing quite like being able to ditch our coats and just dive headlong into summer.
But another weather benchmark that important for Maine farmers and gardeners, is when the last frost of the year finally happens. Most meteorologists aren't willing to put that kind of faith into what the "weather models" say. On the other hand, the Old Farmer's Almanac is happy to take a guess.
The Old Farmer's Almanac is surprisingly accurate.
Most people kind of roll their eyes when you mention the Old Farmer's Almanac as a forecasting tool. But, they have maintained 80% accuracy over the years. That's gotta be at least on par with a normal weather person. I'm not bagging on meteorologists, but to deny the almanac as a tool isn't fair.
TOFA has already predicted this to be an awkward spring. They used the phrase "polar coaster" to describe it. So while it may seem that Spring is going to be iffy around these parts, TOFA also has some opinions about when Spring will unofficially end when the frost finally stops for the year.
What's the verdict?
Well, in short terms, from the southern tip of Maine to the north, most areas will see frost done with by the end of May. As you'd suspect, the change starts earlier in the south, and works its way up. For instance, in Kittery, the frost should be all done by May 9th. In Presque Isle, it could take until May 22nd.
That shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone, the warm always moves south to north. But what's encouraging, is that we're actually talking in terms of when winter will end. When there's no more frost, it usually feels like there's no more winter. Frankly, I'll take it. Click on any of the towns near you on the site, and see when it'll end for you.
When winter is over, summer is around the corner, which means awesome shows on the Bangor waterfront. Here's who's coming this summer, so far...
