It was on this date in 1964 that West coast American girls began screaming at the top of their lungs.  Was there music?  We think so.  But, it was drowned out by American girls screaming at the top of their lungs.

Beatlemania invaded the West coast of the United States for the first time when the Fab Four took to the stage at the Cow Palace in San Francisco.  Over 17,000 fans saw them play twelve songs: "Twist and Shout’, ‘You Can't Do That’, ‘All My Loving’, ‘She Loves You’, ‘Things We Said Today’, ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘Can't Buy Me Love’, ‘If I Fell’, ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’, ‘Boys’, ‘A Hard Day's Night’, and ‘Long Tall Sally."  They would continue to play the same 12 songs for the remainder of the tour which ended in New York on September 20th.

What a crappy day in television history on this date in 1968 when the Monkees show ended its run on NBC, thus ending wacky weird color schemes, corny jokes, and very groovy music.  Oh wait, there was the Partridge Family.

Hey, you know you love the song.  It ain't rock, but you dig it. Lionel Richie and the Commodores started a five week run at #1 in 1978 with Three Times A Lady.  Lionel wrote the song for his grandmother, mother and his wife.  Get it?  Three times a lady.  There's a reason why this guy is filthy rich!

Remember the jukebox?  Whaaaat?  Yes, it was a machine that you put money into to hear your favorite song.  It was more or less located in restaurants and bars.  It was on this date in 1988 that Crazy by Patsy Cline and Hound Dog by Elvis Presley were announced as the "Most played song jukebox songs of the first hundred years."

Some of my favorite lyrics concerning the jukebox:  Do you know what songs these lyrics are from?  What Googling?

"There she is again standing over by the record machine
Ooh, she's looking like a model on the cover of a magazine
Why, she's too cute to be a minute over seventeen."

"Ah, can't you see me standin' here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen."

One of my favorite classic rock bands is Thin Lizzy!  The band always had a couple of great guitarists, but what really made the band was their fabulous bass player and soulful vocalist, Phil Lynott!  Phil struggled with alchohol and drugs and then passed away far too soon at the age of 36 in 1986.  On this date in 2005, a life-sized statue of Phil was erected in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland.  Thin Lizzy band mates Gary Moore, Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham attended the ceremony.

Ginger Baker, one of the finest drummers in the world was born today in 1939.  He got together with his old band mates Eric Clapton and the late Jack Bruce for a Cream reunion awhile back.  Ginger lives in South Africa and smokes five packs of cigarettes a day.  He's now 75.  Take that Mother Nature.

Today we have Deep Purple as the I-95 Artist/Band Of The Day, because it's Ian Gillan's 70th birthday.  Gillan sang all of the big songs by the heavy metal English band and he also sang the role of Jesus on the recording of Jesus Christ Superstar!
