Public works crews for the City of Bangor are responding to a large sinkhole that has developed on the waterfront.

The sinkhole, most likely produced by today's downpours, is located on the waterfront walkway, about 200 feet south of the intersection of Railroad and Front Streets.

City officials believe the sinkhole formed as a result of a collapse of a storm water outfall line. The sinkhole is estimated to be 8 feet deep and is 15 feet wide and appears to be stable at this time.

Officials say crews will have to wait until about 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, to determine the exact cause of the sinkhole and begin repairs

People are asked to avoid the area.
