Today, President Obama established another national monument close to Maine, although this time it's off shore.

Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument will protect almost 5,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean.  The area is home to certain aquatic species not found anywhere else on the planet. The area is about 150 miles southeast of Cape Cod, and also home to endangered whales and deep sea coral reefs.  The Monument is the first of its kind in the Atlantic!

The President said the action was taken due to concerns about warming waters and the impact they are taking on certain species there like lobster, scallops and salmon.  Government hopes the move will reduce the toll of climate change in the area.
