A portion of Western Avenue in Dixmont is closed as deputies investigate a double fatal crash.

UPDATE: Officials have identified the victims as 34-year-old Andrew Clark of Belfast and 74-year-old Doreen Spinney of Dixmont.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office received the report of a serious motor vehicle crash on Western Avenue in Dixmont just after 12:30 Wednesday afternoon. Responding Deputies found that two vehicles were involved in the incident and both the drivers had died at the scene.

An early investigation into the circumstances of the crash indicate that a sedan traveling west crossed over the center line and struck a sedan that was traveling east. Each vehicle contained only the driver, both of whom had died in the crash. The names of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing, but officials say witnesses to the crash have been identified and interviewed. Assisting at the scene were members of the Dixmont and Newburgh Fire Departments.

Officials say the road is expected to be closed for an extended period of time.
