Since 2005, the Pineland Farms Dairy Company has been handcrafting artisan cheese, using milk from local farms with no artificial growth hormones or antibiotics, in small batches. They've been producing this cheese in a large facility on Milk Street in Bangor. The cheese has been available for sale in grocery stores across the state, and even won the distinction of being chosen as Down East Magazine's Best of Maine cheese maker for 2025.

"Tropical Cheese is a premium brand with a rich family-run history, offering an assortment of Hispanic cheese, meat, and other food products. As the market leader in the Hispanic cheese category on the East Coast, Tropical Cheese has established itself as a trusted brand among Hispanic households, driving differentiated value to its customers through its authentic flavors, superior product quality, and direct-store-delivery and logistics capabilities"

The City says the move will set up the Maine facility to support and expand the brand's manufacturing efforts, establishing a second core cheese manufacturing facility for Tropical, along with its primary NJ location.

"The facility has been a cornerstone of Maine's dairy industry for decades, and Tropical Cheese sees this as an opportunity to build on that foundation for its next chapter of growth. The Bangor facility will continue under Tropical Cheese ownership, with the existing team remaining in place and Mark Whitney continuing to lead the facility as General Manager, Bangor Operations."

Sources say there will be no immediate changes to suppliers or customers. They say the company chose to set up its second facility in the Bangor area due to the city's wealth of supportive resources, including an International Airport, the surrounding universities, and a skilled workforce.
