What started as a "self-serve, cash and carry neighborhood discount store", in North Carolina in the late 1950s, The Family Dollar offered folks across nation an affordable shopping experience that people have become quite familiar with now.

"In 1958, a 21-year-old entrepreneur with an interest in merchandising became intrigued with the idea of operating a low-overhead, self-service retail store. Leon Levine believed he could offer his customers a variety of high-quality, good value merchandise for less than $2. Because he had grown up in his family’s retail store, he understood value, quality and customer satisfaction."

By the early 1990s more than 2000 Family Dollar stores had opened in states all over America.

Today, Maine has over 50 Family Dollar locations, including one at 89 State Street in Bangor, which has been around for over a decade. In 2015, the store suffered a fire, and was shut down for months, reopening the next year, in 2016.

A decade later, it looks like the store will be closing once again, but this time for good.

It was announced, back in March of 2024, that the franchise was going to close roughly 1000 stores nationwide within a couple of years, so there was always that possibility that this day would come, as much as many hoped it would not.

Experts indicated the underperforming stores would be considered for closure first.

Just in the last 2 years, over 11 Family Dollar locations, which are owned by parent company, Dollar Tree, have closed in Maine.

"Store Closing" signs went up on the side of the State Street location Wednesday, indicating the Bangor location would be added to the list. There's no word yet on when they will officially close up shop, but things look pretty imminent.

Officials say to check the website, and so far, they're still listing the Bangor store as being open from 8 AM to 10 PM every day of the week.
