I know, I let the cat right out of the bag with this one, but it's pretty cool that we had a local woman win her first game of such an iconic television show.

For those of you who had not yet heard, Bangor writer Emily Burnham made her debut appearance on the national game show, Jeopardy! Wednesday night. And she did her home state proud, taking the top spot and winning the show.

Burnham, who is originally from the Belfast area, has spent the last 20 years living and working in Bangor.

A lifelong fan of the show, she had applied multiple times online and was finally selected this spring to appear on an episode hosted by Ken Jennings.

Her fellow contestants were Edward Tournier, a teacher from Brooklyn, New York and
a technical writer from Ashland, Massachusetts, Jennifer Leavey.

Tournier was the returning champion for the week, having won the game on both Monday and Tuesday's shows.

Locally, fans of both Jeopardy! and Burnham gathered at a local brewery and watched the show play out, with Burnham holding her own.

Thejeopardyfan.com, an online fan community of the show run by a man named Any Saunders from Canada, had Burnham in as a favorite to win from the get-go.

"In terms of how I think tonight's game will go, I have a feeling that Emily might do well, as I saw Bangor-area media take enough of an interest in her appearance to begin publicizing it online last week. Usually, that's a good sign that things will go well for a contestant."

Burnham battled well throughout the show.

Then came time for Final Jeopardy, and Burnham beat the two-day champion Tournier, correctly guessing the question: Who is Lindsay Vonn?

Burnham's total winnings of the evening ended at $17, 201.

With this win, Burnham advances to Thursday's episode to defend her title. We look forward to seeing just how far she can carry her win!

Great job, Emily!
