Where’s The Water? Bucksport And Brewer Closing Pools At Height Of Summer Season

Where's the water? That's what folks in Brewer and Bucksport are wondering.

It's a bit of a mystery, but something is causing the water levels in the pools in both those towns to drop significantly, to the point that it's impacting people's ability to swim.

Some of that could be attributed to natural causes like heat, humidity, direct sunlight, and such, experts say. Others say it could be a fault or a blocked pump or pipe, a structural issue, or a leak.

In the case of the pool in Bucksport, they think it might be a leak.

The Town of Bucksport had to close the Tim Emery Municipal Pool the day before the 4th of July!

"Due to a leak, the Tim Emery Swimming Pool is unable to maintain safe water levels and is closed until further notice. For nearby swimming, we recommend: Craig Pond, Alamoosook Lake, or Sandy Point Beach."

The town has been getting help from local contractors and experts who are trying to get to the bottom of where the leak may be and how to best resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, not too far away in Brewer, they're having a similar issue. Brewer's pool, located at 318 Wilson Street, is experiencing what they're calling "excessive water loss."

According to the Brewer Parks and Rec Department, the pool has been closed temporarily, as of Thursday, July 16th, so it can be drained and examined. Officials with the department say they are making arrangements for those who have signed up for swim lessons to be rescheduled or reimbursed.

"We expect the closure to last at least a week while the pool is drained and evaluated. If you were scheduled for a make-up swim lesson tomorrow or are registered for Session 2 swim lessons, a credit will be applied to your account. If you would prefer a refund instead, please call our office at 989-5199."

Hopefully, in both cases, the fix is quick, and folks in the area can get back to enjoying the brief summer season we have in Maine, before the temperatures start to cool too much.
