Cruise ships? In Bangor? Why not?

For years I lived in Portland, which often felt like the cruise ship capital of the world. Especially because I worked in a restaurant in the Old Port at the time. And it's funny, because you could always tell when the ships were in town, because it just felt like a perpetual onslaught in the kitchen, hahaha.

But I also lived away from Bangor long enough, that I literally never even knew cruise ships came up the Penobscot. There hasn't been none since 2011, and I moved back here in 2013. Totally off my radar. But we have a nice deep channel through the river, all the way up from Penobscot Bay, so that's about to change.

Those big old boats are going to be making a comeback this year.

According to WABI, the Bangor City council voted unanimously to bring ships from American Cruise Lines up the river to the Bangor waterfront. Now, I say big boats, and compared to what we usually see on the Penobscot, they'll look pretty big. But these cruise ships only carry about 90 passengers. The real big boats can hold thousands.

ACL has secured a 20-year lease with Bangor, and speaking from personal experience, cruise ships are absolutely awesome for the local economy. Those folks love to shop, they love to eat, they love to drink, and they love to see what local ports have to offer on all these fronts.

No word yet on exactly when they'll start showing up here, but obviously we're a few months away from warmer weather. But it definitely looks like our already busy waterfront is going to have some new shapes in our skyline.
