Investigators Look For Cause Of Fire At Historic Washington County Church

Maine's top fire investigators are looking into what may have caused a Church in the Washington County town of Dennysville to catch fire.

According to the Maine State Fire Marshal's Office, fire broke out at the Dennysville Edmunds Congregational Church on King Street just before 8:00 Monday morning.

Thankfully, no one was inside the church at the time the fire broke out, and no one was injured in the incident. But there's a question of why the fire broke out in the first place.

"The fire originated near the rear of the church. Members of the Dennysville Fire Department responded quickly and extinguished the fire, limiting the damage primarily to the exterior of the building. Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire."

According to the Tides Institute, this historic structure was constructed almost 200 years ago, and still features the original box pews from that time.

"The Congregational Church, which was established in 1805, originally included members from the area extending from Robbinston to Whiting. The present church building, which was erected in 1834, is located high on the hill above Dennys River. It is of simple design with a rectangular base three bays long, pointed arch windows, a gable roof, and a square steeple base."

Since firefighters were able to keep the damage to a minimum, community members and congregants are inviting the public to attend this Sunday's service at 11 AM to show appreciation for their efforts.

"This morning firefighter heroes protected this building, so our community is blessed to have the opportunity to continue gathering in this meeting place. The word “church” refers to the people, but this Meeting House has hosted generations of gatherings for both joyous and somber occasions. Since 1834, community members have met here for worship services, Vacation Bible School, weddings, funerals, baptisms, and Christmas events. This steeple is a beacon to souls on both sides of the river. "
