The very popular paved walking trail that begins on Birch Avenue and ends at Route 179 will be extended all the way to Merrill Furniture on High Street.

This past Monday night, the Ellsworth City Council accepted a $25,000 grant from the Maine Department of Transportation that would extend the current 1.3 mile long trail another .07 of a mile, so that it would join the Downeast Sunrise Trail by the Comfort Inn, and also allow people to cross High Street by the traffic lights by Merrill Furniture for access.

The exact path of the new portion of the trail, how it will affect Beals Avenue, and which side of the railroad tracks it will be on, is yet to be determined.  The process may take as long as two years, according to the Bangor Daily News.

Even though it would connect with the Downeast Sunrise Trial, ATV use would not be allowed on it, which is very good news for walkers, runners and bikers.
