If you've ever traveled along the Griffin Road in Bangor, between Ohio Street and Broadway, you've likely passed a long section of field across from the back entrance to Husson University. It's a spot where I've seen the Bangor High School Cross-country teams go to practice, I have often wondered what, if anything would be done with that land?

It appears I was not the only one pondering that query, as in the last month a handful of folks have asked me about that same spot, so I reached out to the folks at City Hall and found out that there is a plan for that space, and it sounds like it has the potential to be awesome!

David Warren, Communications Manager with the City of Bangor, says while still in the early stages, the City is hoping that land will eventually become a space for residents to use for ice skating, among other recreational activities.

"The city is looking to build a new parks and recreation facility on about 40 acres of land on Griffin near Husson University."

"It’s meant to feature a combined ice arena and recreation center. The ice arena would have two rinks: one for practice and the other for youth hockey and high school events.

"The Bangor School Department currently owns the land. The project would be a significant step in the city’s ongoing efforts to improve entertainment and athletic facilities, such as with the past work at Cameron Stadium."

"The project is still in the early stages and the City Council next month is expected to review a final feasibility study, which would include construction and operating costs."

We will definitely have to keep our eyes out for more information on this, and will pass it along when there's more to tell.
