Folks in Prospect are getting ready to do some spring cleaning at one of Maine's most iconic landmarks.

Opening day at Fort Knox and the Penobscot Narrows Observatory for the 2026 season is coming up on May 1st. The park will greet visitors from 9 AM to 5 PM that day.

In order to get everything ready for those who come to see all the sights, the Friends of Fort Knox are hosting a "Park Clean Up Day" this coming weekend, and they're looking for a few helping hands.

According to the Fort Knox Maine Facebook page, work will get underway Saturday April 25th at 10 AM.

"Friends of Fort Knox open invitation to help clean the grounds to promote, spark community interest and prepare for opening day. About 30-50 volunteers help with routine maintenance as part of the national annual Historic Park Clean-up Day organized by The American Battlefield Trust. Volunteers receive snacks/drinks. Meet at the Visitor’s & Education Center, brick building."

Volunteers will be working until 2 PM that day.

Later in May, Friends of Fort Knox will be hosting a program called "School of the Civil War Soldier, where people can take a trip back in time to see what life was like during the Civil War, as members of the living history unit, the 15th Regiment Alabama Volunteer Infantry Company A, conduct training drills and march at the Fort.

Take A Forbidden Look Inside Frozen Fort Knox

Fort Knox is closed for the season. While winter visitors can roam the grounds, the interior of the fort is closed off from the general public. If you browse through the photos below, you'll see why the fort is strictly off-limits until spring. That being said, we were given permission to enter the fort to create this gallery.

Again, the fort is closed from November through April. Do not attempt to enter the interior of Fort Knox. Entering the fort during the closed months is trespassing, and very dangerous.
