State Police Think Medical Event Caused Fatal Motorcycle Accident Near Freeport Wednesday

Traffic came to a halt on Interstate 295 near Freeport on Wednesday evening when a 78-year-old Freeport man died after losing control of his motorcycle.

Maine State Police say Edmund Goodman was riding his 2016 Indian Springfield bike north just before 7 PM yesterday when they believe he suffered a medical event. Authorities think this event rendered him unable to operate the motorcycle safely.

"...he left the roadway to the left and traveled onto the grass-covered shoulder, where the motorcycle struck the raised edge of a crossover. The impact caused the motorcycle to overturn multiple times, ejecting Goodman. Several medically trained motorists who were passing by immediately stopped and rendered aid; however, Goodman died at the scene from injuries he sustained in the crash."

Authorities from the state police, the Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Office, and the Maine DOT immediately shut down the northbound travel lane to conduct their investigation. They say no other vehicles were involved in Wednesday's crash, only Goodman's motorcycle.

Yarmoth Fire and Rescue were also on hand to help, along with Copp Motors.

According to the Maine Department of Transportation, so far this year, there have been just under 20 motorcycle fatalities in the state, most of which occurred between March and July.

Last year, for the entire year, there were 25 motorcycle deaths in Maine.
