Man Accused Of Sexually Abusing A Child In 2023 Arrested In Old Town Maine This Week
It's a case that's been in the making for over 2 years, authorities say.
Somerset County's Sheriff, Dale Lancaster says it was the Fairfield PD that originally fielded the initial complaint in August of 2023, that Corey M. Cox (age 26 at that point) allegedly sexually assaulted a young child under the age of 10. The case was assigned to Fairfield Police Detective Shanna Blodgett.
Lancaster says that for the next two years, Detective Blodgett worked in cooperation with multiple agencies including DHHS, the Children's Advocacy Center of Kennebec and Somerset Counties, and the Somerset County DA's office to collective evidence connected to the initial complaint against Cox.

Then earlier this spring, Sheriff Lancaster says another detective from the Somerset County Sheriff's Office was brought in to join the effort.
"In May of 2025, Somerset County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jeremy Leal, who is assigned as an investigator with the Somerset County District Attorney’s Office, was asked to assist in the investigation. After approximately 2 months, using the valuable information already obtained by Detective Blodgett, Detective Leal was able to gather further information and evidence that would support obtaining an arrest warrant for Cox."
Corey M. Cox of Old Town, who is currently 28 years old, was taken into custody Friday and charged with Gross Sexual Assault.

At first, Cox's bail was set at $10,000 cash, but at his initial court appearance Monday, that was lowered to $2,500, and the condition was made that he cannot have contact with the victim, the victim's family, or any minors.
Sheriff Lancaster says Cox is still being held at the Somerset Correctional Facility.
He credit's Cox's arrest to the cooperation of the multiple agencies as they worked together for two years, making sure the evidence in this case was solid.
"This as an example of the importance of agencies working together with the common goal of holding perpetrators accountable for such horrific crimes."
Lancaster says the DA's Office is still looking into the details of Cox's case, which may lead to more charges against him.
