Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor has found suitable owners for 2 of the 3 condominiums still being built in Old Town, and now they need an owner for the largest unit.

I chatted with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor's Board President Dustin Smiley last week about the build in Old Town, that has been a whole new experience for the organization. Usually, they build or renovate single-family homes, and are dealing with just one owner. But when the opportunity presented itself to build a 3-unit condominium and serve 3 families, organizers jumped at the chance. It presented some new challenges, including setting up a condo board, dealing with plumbing for multiple bathrooms, etc. But Smiley says it's been a great experience.

Now, the organization is looking for someone to buy the center unit. The two 3-bedroom-1-bath single story side units have homeowners already working on the build. But the largest, center unit still needs a family to call it home. It's a two-story 3-bedroom-1.5 bath condo, that will be move-in ready shortly. The condominium complex is on Perkins Avenue in Old Town, close to the school and Perkins park and is a perfect location for a family.

Habitat for Humanity can help the right candidate arrange for a low-interest mortgage, with payments that fit their budget. Good credit is important, but anyone who thinks they'd like to apply should do it. The income guidelines are not as stringent as some people believe. Check out the 'Do I qualify' questionnaire on the Habitat for Humanity website, to get an idea whether this might be a good fit for you. Applications can also be submitted through the website.

The next build is in Bangor, on Pearl Street, and sponsorship donations are needed, for both the Old Town and Bangor builds. Check the website or stop by the Bangor ReStore on Harlow Street to get more information.
